I am Nancy Richards, a Professional Dog Trainer. I have almost
13 years of practical, hands-on experience in training dogs
of various breeds (from the cute little Chihuahuas and Yorkies
to Boxers and even Great Danes). But, before I tell you any
more about my dog training philosophies, let me tell you about
3 of the dumbest dog housebreaking myths:
| Myth
#1: |
Rub
your dog’s nose on its poop
I hate this. When you have brought your puppy
home, it is like a human baby. Can you ever imagine
rubbing your baby’s nose on it’s faeces? |
| Myth
#2: |
You should
use physical force (smacking, hitting, choking)
to make it learn that eliminating inside is not
right.
Almost all pet dogs have only one aim in life
– to please their owners. And in return,
you should try to teach your dog with love and
patience and not by scaring him away. |
| Myth
#3: |
You need
to YELL at your dog, so it accepts you as a tough
master.
There is no point yelling at your dog if it has
done something wrong. Yes, you need to use a firm
voice and make it clear that you mean what you
say. But, there is no point yelling at him.

How Is This Housebreaking System
Different From Others?
Let me first explain how my dog training
philosophy is different from others. For housetraining of
dogs, I believe:
| Fact
#1: |
It
is easier to potty train dogs in the winter |
| Fact
#2: |
In order
to be fully housetrained, it is important that
your dog has potty training accidents. |
|
Just give me a minute and I will explain to you my reasons...
During winter, your dog is NOT too keen
on spending much time outside. Hence there are fewer chances
of distractions. Therefore winter is the most convenient time
to potty train.
I also feel that, for a puppy, to learn
his housebreaking rules, he must be given the chance to eliminate
in the house - and, in the process get CAUGHT and CORRECTED.
Therefore such “accidents” are necessary for him
to learn the REAL procedure.
Similarly, contrary to popular belief
– I feel, every dog, has his or her own individual personality.
Housebreaking him will be easiest if you can understand his
instincts and fine tune your actions accordingly.
The tips for potty training a Labrador puppy
and those for potty training a Chihuahua puppy can be similar
– but not exactly same.
Why?
Small dogs, like Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, Poms, Yorkies and others
can actually sneak their way to out of the way places (like
a remote corner in the house or to an insignificant portion
of the curtain) and eliminate there, instead of asking to
go outside. And they will smartly do this at the same place
for a number of times, before you even realize it.
Which means, a Toy or small dog owner
should be MORE vigilant and should allow less freedom to the
dog, till it has been fully housebroken.
Again, Hounds like Beagles or Dachsunds have
a one-track mind and tend to focus on some scent that they
have picked up. They may simply forget why they were actually
let loose outside. They may even try to break through their
designated area and go out just to follow that scent.
So, Hound owners should
be MORE careful when they are letting their dog go outside
into the yard.
Or, Terriers, in general are stubborn and
have a mind of their own. So, a Terrier owner
has to be more firm in making his dog listen to his commands.
And that is why, our Housetraining system,
not only talks about common housetraining methods –
like Paper, Litterbox or Outdoor Training, it also deals with
potty training problems faced by different dog groups in
general (Toy dogs, hounds, terriers, retrievers) and as many
as 59 dog breeds in particular.
We not only believe in teaching and helping
you housetrain your dog, we take it a step forward. We help
you understand your dog's inborn traits and make you aware
of the pitfalls of housebreaking that most dog owners are
NOT aware of.
Outdoor training is, by far, the most popular method
for housetraining. You will learn about the precautions that
you need to take in your fence when you start outdoor potty
training for your dog. This will ensure that you will never
lose your dog, even if you allow it to go outside, all alone.
There is no other housebreaking course
available on the Internet that covers such topics on Breed
Instincts and Specific Problems or Fence Construction
in such great detail.
